God is a judge of
the widows:
Psalms 68:5- A father of
the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.
God protects Widows
from those who would prey on them:
Isaiah 10:2- To turn aside
the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people,
that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!
God instructs
Widows to trust in Him:
Jeremiah 49:11 - Leave thy
fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.
God pronounces woe
to those who devour widows for hypocritical gain:
Matthew 23:14 Woe unto
you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a
pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
Mark 12:40- Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers:
these shall receive greater damnation.
Luke 20:47- Which devour widows' houses, and for a show make long prayers: the
same shall receive greater damnation.
Jesus spoke of the
widows in Elijah's Day:
Luke 4:25 - But I tell you
of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was
shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the
land;
The Early Church's
first conflict came as a result of the neglect of widows:
Acts 6:1 - And in those
days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring
of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the
daily ministration.
Widows in the early
church were great intercessors with a heart of humility and contrition:
Acts 9:39- Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought
him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and showing
the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.
Widows were
mentioned along with saints in the early church:
Acts 9:41- And he
gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and
widows, presented her alive.
Paul addressed
widows concerning marriage in his letter to the Corinthians:
1 Corinthians 7:8 -
I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide
even as I.
We are commanded to
HONOR widows who are widows indeed:
1 Timothy 5:3- Honor
widows that are widows indeed.
We are to
discerning of those widows who wax wanton against Christ:
1 Timothy 5:11- But the
younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ,
they will marry;
We are commanded to
RELIEVE widows of burdens:
1 Timothy 5:16 - If any
man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the
church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.
Ministry to the
widows proves whether our religion is pure and undefiled:
James 1:27- Pure religion
and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and
widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
